The so-called Lauren Graham rule did not help Lauren Graham. Despite new nominating procedures that were expected to open up the Emmys to previously overlooked performances like that of the Gilmore Girls star, the list of nominations for the 58th annual Emmys looked pretty familiar. Newer favorites like My Name Is Earl, The Office, and Entourage did OK (five nominations each), but not as well as such past nominees as Lost, Six Feet Under (nine nods each), Desperate Housewives, The Sopranos, Boston Legal (seven each), and The West Wing (six). Then again, it’s worth noting that last year’s Emmy powerhouse Housewives was snubbed for Outstanding Comedy, and none of its stars was nominated, save for sporadic supporting actress Alfre Woodard.

Overall, TNT miniseries Into the West was the most nominated program, with 16 nods. The most nominated regular series was 24, with 12 citations, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods for Kiefer Sutherland, Gregory Itzin, and Jean Smart. Will & Grace was the most nominated comedy, noted 10 times, including acting nods for Debra Messing, Megan Mullally, and Sean Hayes. American Idol topped the reality slate with eight nominations, including Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. As usual, HBO was the most nominated network (95 nods), followed by ABC (64), CBS (47), and NBC (46).

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Garrett announced the nominations Thursday morning in a pre-dawn press conference at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Hollywood headquarters. The Emmy ceremony will take place August 27 at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. Conan O’Brien will host the NBC broadcast.
