Ryan Dombal recommends new songs by the G-Unit rapper, Jamie Liddell, and others
New tracks by Lloyd Banks and Jamie Lidell
LLOYD BANKS, ”MY HOUSE”
Even though G-Unit lieutenant Lloyd Banks regurgitates the same 50 Cent-style rhymes his crew has been spitting for years, this track still thumps real hard — thanks to yet another space-invader-explosion beat courtesy of newly lean superproducer Timbaland. JAMIE LIDELL, ”GAME FOR FOOLS (LIVE)”
Recently handpicked by Beck to open a few live dates, this Brit soul man shares much of his big-name admirer’s quirky eloquence. Also following in the footsteps of Beck — who dropped Guerolito, a remix addendum to last year’s Guero, last December — Lidell has a new odds ‘n’ sods release, Multiply Additions, which finds its source material in 2005’s superb Multiply. ”Game for Fools” sounds like it was made decades ago; its lived-in grooves are timeless, and on this live take, its slow gait is delightfully relaxed. DON LENNON, ”LAST COMIC STANDING”
”John Ritter died two days ago/ I saw a montage of his life’s work on some entertainment show,” deadpans this bone-dry singer-songwriter. ”They blew it all out of proportion the way that TV always does/ They said he was one of the greatest physical comedians there ever was.” However blunt, the quietly effective track isn’t mean-spirited as much as it’s bittersweet and honest. With a guitar, harmonica and piano, Lennon pays tribute to the very serious art of stand-up comedy — elegantly knocking Carrot Top while paying tribute to classic Bill Cosby. LOLA RAY, ”OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN”
For better or worse, Richard Gere is not involved in this track from Brooklyn new-wave revivalists Lola Ray. Backed by the hookiest horns this side of Dexy’s Midnight Runners, yelpy lead singer John Balicanta leads his group through a tricky track that hides its yearning core inside a playfully upbeat stomp.
