This compilation of Diamond covers, some decades old, has all you’d expect (Urge Overkill’s ”Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” UB40’s ”Red Red Wine”). What you don’t anticipate are its obscure and surprisingly soulful remakes. Who knew that Bobby Womack tackled ”Sweet Caroline,” that Alex Chilton led the Box Tops through ”Ain’t No Way,” and that the late soul crooner Arthur Alexander lent a weary depth to ”Glory Road”? The Four Tops’ ”I’m a Believer” doesn’t top the Monkees’ version, but Forever Neil Diamond is one of those rare patchwork collections that sparkle.
