Felicity Huffman deserved the Oscar nod for her fine-tuned turn as a transgender woman meeting the son she unwittingly fathered in Transamerica, but writer-director Duncan Tucker is so careful to avoid exploitation, he ends up with an unsurprising road picture.

EXTRAS In his commentary, Tucker claims his ”strong suit as a filmmaker” is he doesn’t ”know anything about making movies” and says Huffman’s children didn’t recognize her when they visited the set. In an interview, the actress affectionately recounts: ”I’d be feeling something deeply, and crying, and I’d hear Duncan laughing behind the monitor.”
