For all his obvious qualities — the matador handsomeness, the implosive calm — Andy Garcia has always lacked any trace of a sense of humor about himself; he’s like a Michael Imperioli who never found his Sopranos. Garcia directed The Lost City, this tribute to the Cuba that Castro destroyed, and though the filmmaker’s feel for his Cuban heritage is bone-deep, it’s a glazed and dolorous movie — a depressed epic. The shadow of the Godfather films drapes itself over this tale of a nightclub owner (Garcia) who watches, with an anger too passive to fully engage us, as his two brothers are seduced and destroyed by the revolution.
