Viridiana

This typically classy, high-def digital Criterion Collection entry almost makes you forget that Viridiana is minor work from the jaundiced Spanish surrealist director Luis Buñuel. A blond novitiate (Silvia Pinal) visits her wealthy country-squire uncle (Fernando Rey); he tries seducing her, drugs her, dresses her in a wedding gown. Crass farmhands take over the country house to gorge on food and wine; Buñuel uses them to stage a Last Supper frieze that still startles for its casual blasphemy. EXTRAS A playful ’64 French-TV interview with the wily Buñuel.
