Filmed at odd angles and in tinted amber, Delicatessen, an absurdist comedy follows survivors of an unspecified apocalypse, now living in a tenement and cleaving to their landlord, a butcher, for rations of meat (don’t ask what kind). EXTRAS Codirector Marc Caro declined to revisit his low-budget debut, but Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) confesses in his commentary a fondness for filming feet and names influences as varied as Laurel and Hardy and Alien (Jeunet later directed Alien Resurrection). A collection of screen tests and a making-of montage make sense only as sidebars.
