Between drawing zaftig ostrich-humanoids and chatting with his reclusive brother (who is meditating atop a bed of nails), cult cartoonist Robert Crumb (Fritz the Cat) clearly inhabits a dimension quite different from Charles Schulz’s. In this documentary, Terry Zwigoff paints a bittersweet portrait of his longtime pal as both quirky charmer and unsavory misanthrope — think Woody Allen meets Steve Buscemi in Zwigoff’s Ghost World. EXTRAS In a joint commentary, Zwigoff playfully chides Roger Ebert for perpetuating a rumor that Zwigoff had warned Crumb, ”Make this movie or I’ll shoot myself.”
