A group of adventure-seekers ventures into the Appalachian wilderness only to meet unspeakable horrors at the hands of a mysterious race. Feel like you’ve seen this before? That’s kinda what writer-director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers) was going for. ”It’s a bit of a nod and a wink to Deliverance,” says the director. (Though, in a departure from Deliverance, these protagonists are all women.) ”I wanted to deal with the horrifying nature of caves,” he says, ”the claustrophobia, drowning, the dark itself. And then [the characters] find out that there’s something else down there with them.” Something not nice, huh? ”Bad, yeah,” he chuckles.
