Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary), 28, and Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead), 35, are engaged and expecting their first child.
Eminem (né Marshall Mathers), 33, filed for divorce from wife Kim on April 5 in Detroit. The pair remarried in January….Sin City director Robert Rodriguez, 37, and producing partner/wife, Elizabeth Avellan, 44, are separating after 16 years of marriage.
NBC announced on April 6 that The View’s Meredith Vieira, 52, will take over for Katie Couric, 49, on the Today show in September. Rumored replacements for Vieira include Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Patricia Heaton, 48, Connie Chung, 59, and CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, 39. Says a View rep: ”Everything written as of late is nothing but gossip.”
ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff, 44, who suffered serious head injuries in January while reporting from Iraq, is now alternating between resting at home and undergoing rehab at a New York-area facility. Says an ABC rep: ”Bob is doing really well and is focused on coming back to work. But it’s going to be a long road.”
Billionaire Ron Burkle, 52, has accused Jared Paul Stern, 35, freelance writer for the New York Post‘s Page Six gossip column, of demanding $220,000 in ”protection” money. Burkle claims the FBI has taped conversations of the alleged extortion. Stern, who maintains his innocence, contends that it was Burkle who taped the conversations: ”He approached me last summer about investing in my clothing company…. You can take three hours of film and extract five minutes and make up any story you want.” The FBI had no comment, and no charges have been filed.
Jennifer Lopez, 35, filed a request for an injunction on April 10 in L.A. against first ex-husband Ojani Noa, 32, to stop him from publishing a manuscript that allegedly contains disparaging information about her. The actress claims that Noa is violating a 2004 settlement that forbids him from disclosing information regarding Lopez. Noa could not be reached for comment…. Tarrant Apparel Group sued Jessica Simpson, 25, for $100 million on April 6 in NYC for breach of contract. TAG says that Simpson agreed to promote her clothing lines, including JS by Jessica, but then reneged, resulting in monetary losses. Simpson could not be reached for comment…. Designer-stylist Niklas Palm sued Melanie Griffith, 48, and Antonio Banderas, 45, on April 7 in L.A. Palm claims the couple owes him almost $26,000 plus damages, after Griffith failed to credit him at the Golden Globes as her dress’ creator. Griffith’s rep says the situation is being amicably resolved.
D12 rapper Proof (né Deshaun Holton), 32, on April 11, after being shot at a nightclub in Detroit. Police are investigating the murder.

Besides writing classics like ”Hello Mary Lou,” Pitney (who died at age 66 on April 5) cut some of Burt Bacharach’s best and hung out with the Stones. ”There are voices that step off a record and take command,” says Bacharach. ”He was irreplaceable.”
