The Butterfly Hunter, an engaging gallery of odd-job holders (by Sports Illustrated staffer Chris Ballard) includes a tournament-caliber lady lumberjack, a wheelchair-bound NFL kicking coach, and an entomologist who lets invertebrates feast on his flesh for Bug Attack! videos. They may not have dream careers (except Don LaFontaine, the ”Voice of God” who does those portentous movie-trailer voice-overs), but they’re all passionate about their callings. Readers may be stoked by the subjects’ gonzo self-actualization — or daunted by the unusual talents, family connections, and obsessiveness required. Either way, Ballard’s vivid profiles and workplace procedurals add up to some captivating résumés.
