First, for our São Paulo-savvy readers: The latest from 70-year-old Brazilian avant-pop icon Tom Zé — a key figure in the ’60s tropicalia movement — is a surreal three-part operetta that explores the (mis)treatment of women in history. For everyone else: Estudando O Pagode is a sprightly psych-pop disc overflowing with exquisite melodies and cooing female voices. Based on an offshoot of samba called pagode, the tracks are alternately placid and funky, with absurd touches — helium-pitched background singers; kazoos — which ensure this will never be used as mere lounge music.
