PopWatch Quiz: What is ChefGate again?
South Park‘s ChefGate is:
- A. Isaac Hayes’ understandable response to the ”Trapped in the Closet” episode’s lampooning of his religion, Scientology.
- B. A power play by Viacom’s summer-tentpole star against a division of the company that aired a show that insulted him.
- C. A reshuffling of episodes to pay tribute to Hayes, as Comedy Central has said, and not a response to pressure from Tom Cruise, whose reps deny his involvement.
- D. A sinister plot that had Hayes pulling out because of a stroke, but which involved a statement complaining about religious bigotry that someone else wrote without the ailing Hayes’ input or consent.
- E. A brilliant ploy by Trey Parker and Matt Stone to get us all to watch tonight’s Season 10 premiere.
Right now, I’m leaning toward E. Parker and Stone are expected to address the whole controversy in tonight’s episode, which Comedy Central has revealed is called ”The Return of Chef!” The network has issued a synopsis for the episode, reportedly made without Hayes’ participation, which reads in part, ”While Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman are thrilled to have their old friend back, they notice that something about Chef seems different. When Chef’s strange behavior starts getting him in trouble, the boys pull out all the stops to save him.”
However the episode treats this week’s events, I hope it’s funny, and I hope it finally puts this whole sorry mess to bed. But if it turns out that Chef’s really in a coma and imagining himself to be someone else named Kevin Finnerty, the fans are gonna riot.
