Three of the big spring movies issued new spots this weekend:

Mission: Impossible 3 (May 5) Does Philip Seymour Hoffman have more than one scene in this movie? We’ve been hearing him issue the same threat to Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt since the Super Bowl. Really, not much new in this montage, just more of the same action set pieces and explosions. I really hope director J.J. Abrams is just giving us another giant Lost/Alias-style head fake, and that there’s more to it than this.

Poseidon (May 12) Sure, the trailer spoils the entire plot, but then, you’ve already seen the original. No surprises here, but there’s some pleasure in seeing that giant wave from director Wolfgang Petersen’s Perfect Storm capsize the cruise ship, and from seeing various B-listers (including Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, Andre Braugher, and Josh Lucas) fight their way to the surface by chewing the scenery.

The Da Vinci Code (May 19) The new TV spot looks disappointingly like a trailer for any other big-budget action thriller; watch it back-to-back with the M:I 3 TV spot and you’ll see what I mean. It’s fun, though, to hear Ian McKellen exercise his plummy, Shakespearean voice reciting rote expository dialogue about a cover-up of a secret that could change the course of human history. Uh,okay, guys — good luck with that. And let us know when you find a better use for the luminous Audrey Tautou than making her run around looking intently concerned.
