There was already a hint of Tin Pan Alley in Sondre Lerche’s first two albums of sophisticated indie pop, but on Duper Sessions the Norwegian dives fully into swing and standards. It’s a cute idea, except that Lerche’s jazz-tinged pop is more compelling than his pop-tinged jazz. Recording with an acoustic bassist and covering ”Night and Day” isn’t quite enough to make him into the next cabaret star, as Lerche sounds just a bit out of his league.
