Advice for ”American Idol” finalist Chris Daughtry

WHAT’S WORKING On his best numbers — Fuel’s ”Hemorrhage (In My Hands),” Stevie Wonder’s ”Higher Ground” — Chris makes you forget you’re watching a televised talent show, which is exactly what an Idol is supposed to do.

WHAT NEEDS WORK In season 5’s way-deep talent pool, not even a dude this charismatic can afford to play it safe, as Chris did choosing Seether’s ho-hum ”Broken” during the semifinals. It’s time he stretched beyond his VH1-friendly comfort zone and attempted some classic rock or even soul.

FROCK U Chris has flawlessly rocked everything from untucked vertical-stripe dress shirts to body-conscious polos and tees. Now bring on the leather pants, already!

REQUEST LIST Rolling Stones’ ”Gimme Shelter,” Janis Joplin’s ”Try (Just a Little Bit Harder),” James Brown’s ”It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”
