HeadScratcher No. 30: Dingo ate your Oscar!
So what do Cher, Jodie Foster, Katharine Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Catherine Zeta-Jones have in common? They all beat, among other ladies, Academy darling Meryl Streep in the Best Actress category — all except Zeta-Jones, who smacked her down in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Herewith, the years, the winners, their films, and the films for which Streep was nominated:
1981: Hepburn (On Golden Pond); The French Lieutenant’s Woman
1983: MacLaine (Terms of Endearment); Silkwood
1987: Cher (Moonstruck); Ironweed
1988: Foster (The Accused); A Cry in the Dark
1998: Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love); One True Thing
2002: Zeta-Jones (Chicago); Adaptation (pictured).
Only 11 of you got the answer this week, which qualifies in my book as “just right”: not too easy; not too difficult. In lieu of wit, I’m just going to refer you to Streep and Lily Tomlin’s brilliant introduction to the Robert Altman tribute and then go home and sleep a little more. This weekend wore me out. I’m telling you: It’s hard out there for a pimp.
