The main ingredients in Michael Robotham’s second thriller, Lost, (a sequel of sorts to 2005’s Suspect) are bought-in-bulk common: an over-the-hill police detective, London variety; a missing girl most everyone believes is long dead; and a brutal Russian mobster hunting a missing cache of diamonds. Even his signature twist is that hoary standby, amnesia, which afflicts our hero after he is found in the Thames with a finger missing and a bullet through his leg. Robotham spins an agreeably complex plot, and he has an eye for peripheral details, like the hero’s Gypsy parentage. Too bad his main story is overfilled with the utterly familiar.
