Leaders of the Free World

With all the high-flash, balls-out bands emerging from the U.K., it’s easy to overlook the understated elegance of Coldplay also-rans Elbow. On their third disc, Leaders of the Free World, the quintet still generates intensity from rich, economical guitar-strings-piano strokes, but the gloom-rock tunes are as sophisticated as ever, outclassing most British hype-bands with thoughtful, tortoiselike aplomb.
