You can’t really accuse Willie Nelson of jumping on the Brokeback Mountain bandwagon. First of all, he’s already on the soundtrack (singing ”He Was a Friend of Mine”). Second, his tongue-in-cheek new song ”Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other” isn’t really new; it was composed in 1981 by Texan songwriter Ned Sublette. Still, the tune must have been ahead of its time; Nelson reportedly heard it back in the ’80s but didn’t record it until recently and didn’t release it until Valentine’s Day. It’s available for download at iTunes, but you can hear a preview of the song as heard during its premiere yesterday on Howard Stern’s show. The song is only just okay, but it does suggest that Nelson and his Dukes of Hazzard co-star Burt Reynolds might have made a nice couple if Burt had only made his feelings known.
