Writer-director Robert Towne (Chinatown) returns to familiar turf with an adaptation of John Fante’s novel about a bottomed-out novelist (Colin Farrell) who seeks his fortune in L.A. and falls for a prickly Mexican waitress (Salma Hayek). Towne was unable to drum up interest in his project for over a decade. ”It’s a dark story, the characters are mean,” he says, recalling the rejections that kept coming until ”this crazy Irishman showed up at my door.” Once production started, Towne had to rein in his fearless stars. ”Both of them are very volatile,” he says, recalling their gusto for a wet and wild beach love scene. ”They said, ‘Let’s use the ocean.’ Then before [we shot], a surfer had his leg bitten off by a shark.” The ocean idea bit the dust.
