Black Cadillac

B+

The thematic stuff of this CD — the death of Roseanne Cash’s father (Johnny), mother (Vivian Liberto Distin), and stepmother (June Carter Cash), all in a two-year span is — so weighted with American myth it cries out for an opera, not a set of emotionally understated singer-songwriter pop. But the best of Cash’s Black Cadillac compositions, especially the luminous piano ballads ”I Was Watching You” and ”The World Unseen,” turns her healing process into great art.
