Our favorite Oscar long shots: Ralph Fiennes

The Brit scared the bejesus out of little kids as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire‘s sinister Lord Voldemort, but it was as Justin Quayle, The Constant Gardener‘s meek diplomat-turned-passionate, crusading widower, that Ralph Fiennes proved why he’s already been twice nominated for an Oscar (in The English Patient and Schindler’s List). Consider one of his first scenes in Gardener alone, which is a true study in nuance: Upon learning of his wife’s murder, his body language remains the same, but his crumbling eyes give away his inner anguish. Here’s hoping Academy members were paying attention.
