Our favorite Oscar long shots: Laura Linney

She doesn’t have a showy part in The Squid and the Whale. As an exhausted wife who calls her sons ”Chicken” and ”Pickle,” Laura Linney joins the rest of the audience in expressing shocked disbelief at the poisonous antics of her soon-to-be ex-husband (played by Jeff Daniels). But perhaps the most surprising thing about the performance is Linney’s choice to underplay it: She throws no fireworks at Daniels, just calm retorts and funny looks. That feels true. Linney shows more restraint than many high-profile actresses might have exhibited, and work this understated deserves Academy recognition.
