Dave Karger's online-only box office prediction: The kid-friendly Disney blockbuster will prevail, but only after a scare from the sadistic Quentin Tarantino-produced shocker

With the holiday season past us, we’ve entered one of the slowest periods of the year at the box office. But the new horror flick Hostel will try to scare up a few bucks and topple The Chronicles of Narnia from the top spot.

It could be a tough fight, but Narnia‘s reign may very continue, as a 45 percent drop would mean another $14 million for the fantasy smash.

Hostel, which is from the same director as the successful 2003 frightfest Cabin Fever, should manage a $13 million debut in about 2,000 theaters, placing it just ahead of King Kong, which should see a 50 percent drop to $12 million.

The comedies Fun With Dick & Jane and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 each look to gross another $8 million, while the new entries Grandma’s Boy and Bloodrayne will have to settle for opening weekends of around $4 million, putting them outside the top five.
