Home Grown! The Beginners Guide to Understanding the Roots, Vol. One & Two

B-

Since hip-hop’s best live act, the Roots, just jumped from Geffen to the recently formed Def Jam Left imprint, one might assume that Home Grown! The Beginners Guide to Understanding the Roots, Vol. One & Two is a way for their old label to squeeze one more release out of them. Maybe so, but we’re glad it’s available: The virtuosic jazz-inspired and soul-spiked singles of Vol. One are a better listening experience than any of their six albums, which have always felt a bit bloated. Vol. Two is for trainspotters only, with nearly 80 minutes of live jams and way too much formless rhyme spitting.
