Dolly Parton: Protest singer
Having successfully covered Led Zeppelin a couple years ago, there’s little Dolly Parton could sing that she couldn’t assimilate into her own country-roots style, including an album’s worth of vintage protest songs and other ’60s tunes. You’d think such a move would alienate her even further from a country establishment that no longer seems to have a place for her, but here’s CMT showing her some love by streaming the new CD, Those Were the Days, in its entirety, at the channel’s website. Check it out to hear how she makes songs like ”Where Have All the Flowers Gone” and ”Imagine” sound neither left nor right, just righteous.
