Apparently, the Rory-Lorelai split is so acrimonious that only a diplomat of the stature of Madeleine Albright (far left, with Alexis Bledel) can resolve it. That’s my guess as to why the former U.S. secretary of state is guest-starring on Gilmore Girls on Oct. 25. She may be the most unexpected guest star on a scripted primetime show since, um, Norman Mailer’s Gilmore Girls appearance last season. The cognitive dissonance of the Gilmore guest spots — convincing us that these unlikely visitors actually live in the same universe as our fictional friends — prompted us at PopWatch HQ to brainstorm a list of the strangest guest spots ever. In more or less chronological order:

1. Richard Nixon, saying ”Sock it to me?” on Laugh-In
2. Sammy Davis Jr. smooching Archie Bunker on All in the Family
3. Paul Williams as Edna Unger’s pop idol on The Odd Couple
4. Nancy Reagan telling Gary Coleman to just say no on Diff’rent Strokes
5. Andy Warhol booking passage on The Love Boat
6. Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger greeting the Carringtons at a real-life charity ball on Dynasty
7. Reclusive author Thomas Pynchon, appearing in cartoon form (and with a paper bag over his head) on two episodes of The Simpsons
