What’s wrong with ”The Amazing Race?”

Half the fun of The Amazing Race (CBS, Tuesdays, 9 p.m.) has always been watching the inter- and intra-couple bickering that goes with being chronically late and lost in a foreign land. Seeing parents yell at their children in exotic New Jersey? Not so fun. Beyond the problem of having all those damn kids to watch, the issue is also a question of numbers: Two-member teams lead to funny arguments; four-member teams lead to lots of unintelligible shouting over one another. So while before we had teams we loved to hate, now it’s just plain hate. I knew we were in trouble when the most interesting thing about the season premiere was that the one black family competing was actually called…the Black family. (It is their name, but it made for some very odd- sounding declarations, like ”Black family, you’re the last team to arrive.”) Look, watching parents and children argue is just plain depressing, and if I want to see goofy kids in allegedly cute and hilarious situations, I’ll turn on America’s Funniest Home Videos, thank you very much. (P.S. Not really.)
