Celebrity fragrance lines, everybody’s favorite frivolous vanity project, are hotter than ever. That, of course, doesn’t mean this fall’s crop is any better than previous contenders. For you, we sniffed out the roses — and the stinkers.

BRITNEY SPEARS: FANTASY INANE PR LINE ”Fantasy is about love’s ability to overwhelm you when you least expect it.” And who doesn’t want to be overwhelmed by Kevin Federline? SMELLS LIKE Watermelon, cupcakes, and desperation. Still, a step up from her last scent, Curious.

ASHANTI: PRECIOUS JEWEL

INANE PR LINE ”The scent captures the sense of believing in your heart and strength of one’s inner character.”

SMELLS LIKE Apparently, the strength of my inner character has an exotic undertone of cloves — and can be purchased at Wal-Mart!

JENNIFER LOPEZ: LIVE

INANE PR LINE ”The box cradles its precious contents like an amorous dance partner.” My! Should we leave these two alone?

SMELLS LIKE Hairspray and Juicy Fruit gum, but less of the block than before.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER: LOVELY

INANE PR LINE ”Sarah Jessica Parker was born in Ohio.”

SMELLS LIKE Orchids and class — but it’ll get you no closer to affording that giant Upper East Side pad.

ANTONIO BANDERAS: SPIRIT FOR WOMEN

INANE PR LINE ”Antonio Banderas knows what you want… for the holidays.” There’s a pony in the perfume?

SMELLS LIKE The generic hoo-ha of whatever Melanie Griffith told him to put in it. Mostly, it reeks of that woman you don’t want sitting next to you on a plane.
