Order in the court! Common's "Testify" video
The new high-concept video for Common’s “Testify” isn’t as, uh, “interesting” as the bombastic, nonsensical clips R. Kelly put out for his “Trapped in the Closet” urban opera, but it does share some of the same melodramatic DNA.
The rapper compares his mini-movie to the Kevin Spacey film The Usual Suspects. Wood Harris (Avon Barksdale from The Wire) plays a man on trial for various homicide and drug charges. His long-suffering wife, Taraji P. Henson (Hustle & Flow), flutters her long, teary eyelashes as she interrupts the proceedings to belt out the tune’s catchy refrain (“Before you lock my love away/Please let me testify”) — actually a genius sample from the Honey Cone’s “Innocent Until Proven Guilty.”
Wood Harris’ brother, Steve (The Practice), pops up as a self-satisfied cop who doesn’t see the story’s twist coming 3,000 miles away, but I’m guessing you will.
Check it out — and then get back to me with your own testimony.
