In case you missed Fantasia’s revelations on 20/20 the other night, in which the American Idol winner revealed that she’s functionally illiterate and a rape survivor, ABC News has posted the meat of it in this online article. The site also has posted the entire first chapter of Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, the new memoir that the 21-year-old dictated to a ghostwriter.

The excerpt seems to capture Fantasia’s earthy voice, speaks movingly of the centrality of religion in her life, describes a childhood of professional singing in her family’s gospel act, and contains a striking anecdote about her father hastily sigining the family to a record contract that cheated them out of songwriting royalties. Given Fantasia’s acknowledgement that she did the same thing, signing contracts stemming from Idol that she couldn’t read, it’s good that she’s finally getting literacy tutoring.
