On Thumbsucker, director Mike Mills (previously of the music-video realm; see Air, Moby, and Pulp) goes for a determinedly schizophrenic split between the deranged Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ditties of Tim DeLaughter and his Texan collective Polyphonic Spree, and the raw intimacy of the late Elliott Smith. Smith handed in several tracks before his death, including a take on Big Star’s ”Thirteen” and — in a recording made only weeks before he passed away — a faithful cover of Cat Stevens’ ”Trouble” that may just break your heart.
