Summer’s movie-star MVPs: Amy Adams

Age 30

Position Ashley in the indie dramedy Junebug

Season highlights Every once in a while, an up-and-coming unknown gives a performance so winning, so surprising, so true, that you can’t help but feel like you’re watching a star being born right before your eyes. We know it’s a cliché, but it’s the only way to describe what Adams does with her role as the garrulous, pregnant naïf who gloms on to her new sister-in-law (Embeth Davidtz) in Junebug. She sparkles with innocence while conveying a sense of deep, nonjudgmental knowing at the same time — no easy feat — and also stands out amid a strong ensemble cast. Adams won an acting prize at Sundance in January; if enough people catch Phil Morrison’s winning indie, she could have more by next year.
