He wasn’t just the tall, mustachioed guy who played Big Enos in the Smokey and the Bandit movies. Pat McCormick, who died this weekend at 78, was also a top TV comedy writer across five decades, creating gags for shows from Get Smart to Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, where he was also a regular sketch player — on one memorable evening, at the height of the 1970s streaking craze, McCormick made a naked dash behind Carson during the host’s monologue. He was the kind of comedian who was especially beloved by other comedians, as is apparent fromthe blog of TV and comic book scribe Mark Evanier, who pays homage to McCormick here and here.
