White‘s doomsday scenario — major explosions in Disneyland and the Mall of America; downed airliners in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Miami; an untested president awake for 72 hours; homegrown religious extremists bent on global war between Christianity and Islam — is meant to be a popcorn Tom Clancy twist on the headlines and anxieties we’ve all lived with for the last four years. Christopher Whitcomb, a former FBI agent, has certainly got the situation-room infighting and sprawling thriller pacing down pat. But he tries to cover everything from ”public-key cryptosystems” to ”a quarto-ported muzzle break” to ”John Lobb shoes polished to an oxblood patina,” and the whole operation comes off crowded, cynical, ridiculous, and a bit too close to home, like a know-it-all neighbor who kidnaps your pet, sends you on a wild-goose chase to find it, and then wonders why you don’t get the joke.
