SUMMARY Via an enchanted wardrobe, siblings Lucy, Edmund, Peter, and Susan travel to the magical world of Narnia, where they must help the heroic lion Aslan defeat the evil White Witch.
MOVIE STATUS The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe will be released by Disney and Walden Media on Dec. 9.
COOL FACT This book was the first published in the series, although it’s No. 2 in the chronology.

Eragon: The Inheritance Trilogy

SUMMARY Medieval farm boy — and elite Dragon Rider — Eragon, accompanied by his blue dragon Saphira and wizard pal Brom, seeks revenge after the evil Galbatorix kills his uncle.
MOVIE STATUS Book 1, Eragon, begins filming Aug. 1 in Budapest and Slovakia under the direction of first-timer Stefen Fangmeier. John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons, and Djimon Hounsou will star; the movie is due to open next June.
COOL FACT The homeschooled Paolini, now 21, began writing book 1 at age 15. After the self-published title was noticed by novelist Carl Hiaasen in 2003, Knopf snapped up the rights to its two sequels. Book 2, Eldest, will reach stores next month.

SUMMARY Twelve-year-old antihero and criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl is sucked into a hidden fairy world after his plan to kidnap Captain Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police (LEP) is foiled.
MOVIE STATUS In development at Disney, with Stuart Beattie (Collateral) writing.
COOL FACT Colfer credits Hill Street Blues as one of his biggest influences in creating his tough-talking fairies.

SUMMARY Just as 12-year-old Oxford resident — and potential savior — Lyra Belacqua learns about a mysterious life-altering substance called Dust, her best pal is kidnapped and it’s off to the Arctic.
MOVIE STATUS Long in development at New Line, which is hoping the trilogy gets a 2007 release.
COOL FACT Playwright Tom Stoppard wrote an early draft and Chris Weitz was attached to helm before backing out. A 2004 London theater production of Materials, directed by Nicholas Hytner, may wend its way to the States as well.

The Spiderwick Chronicles

MOVIE STATUS Paramount and Nickelodeon have tapped Mark Waters (Mean Girls) to direct and David Berenbaum (Elf) to write.
COOL FACT The first three books are being crammed into one movie, à la Lemony Snicket.
