”The Wedding Banquet” made our list of the best and worst movie weddings
THE BLESSED EVENT The Manhattan wedding of Wai-Tung (Winston Chao, center) and Wei-Wei (May Chin, left). Actually, it’s a marriage of convenience, designed to keep Wei-Wei from being deported and to hide Wai-Tung’s homosexuality and his partnership with Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein, right) from his tradition-minded Taiwanese parents.
WHY IT TAKES THE CAKE Dismayed by Wai-Tung’s plan for a no-frills City Hall ceremony, his parents enlist a friend who owns a huge Chinatown restaurant to cater a bountiful banquet for a throng of guests. The raucous feast, with its abundance of Chinese food and booze, spills over into the newlyweds’ hotel suite.
