The Other Side
If anyone could pull off a bluegrass-ish remake of ”Eight Miles High,” it’s ex-Byrd Hillman, whose mandolin-laced overhaul of his old band’s classic opens this unplugged disc, The Other Side. The ballads and Southern gospel that follow aren’t as dramatic, but they’re impeccably sung and plucked. Chris Hillman’s voice is a marvel of ageless wholesomeness, and ”True He’s Gone” has a nicely bitter edge. As with fellow Byrd Roger McGuinn’s 2004 Limited Edition, proof that some classic rockers aren’t terribly worse for the wear.
