Apparently, it’s finally safe for Hollywood to turn the horror of the 9/11 attacks into popcorn entertainment. Variety reports that directors Oliver Stone and Billy Ray (Shattered Glass) both have 9/11 films in the works, both dealing with the initial rescue efforts at the World Trade Center. Stone, who already has Nicolas Cage signed to star, looks like he’ll be first out of the gate. It also looks like Stone will be setting aside his penchant for geopolitical conspiracy theories to focus, as Ray will, on the one thing about the massacre that everyone can feel good about: the heroism of the emergency workers.

Are we ready for dueling 9/11 movies? Will we ever be ready?
