To promote its upcoming cloning thriller The Island (starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, left) DreamWorks has created two fake websites: one purporting to be the home page of Merrick Biotech, the fictional company that runs the cloning operation in the film, and one purporting to be the home page of CloneWatch, imaginary activists protesting the company. There’s even an online protest petition against Merrick.

Sounds familiar? Seems they’ve cloned the idea from Lions Gate’s 2004 cloning thriller Godsend, which also had a fake corporate website that apparently fooled many people, some of whom started an online petition against the ersatz cloning clinic. The DreamWorks marketers also apparently forgot a similar pseudoscientific website used to promote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Or maybe they didn’t forget, they just had their memories erased.
