Must List 2005: System of a Down
Mustworthiness For their fourth and fifth efforts, the political pop-metal maestros are delivering a four-five punch: Mezmerize was just released in May, with a follow-up, Hypnotize, out in late fall. Why no double album? ”Too much material at once is overwhelming,” says Serj Tankian (second from left), 37, singer for the L.A.-based, Armenian-American band. ”Thirty songs [on one CD] would make me want to go to bed.” Fans, however, are buzzing over Mezmerize‘s ear-searing guitars, molar-rattling percussion, and brain-Zappa-ing lyrics (hmmm, ”gonorrhea Gorgonzola,” anyone?).
Laugh Tracks ”Some of the best political minds were comics. So we use humor in our music to get our point across.”
‘Live’ and Learn ”Our first — and probably last — appearance on SNL was a thrill,” says Tankian, referring to the arsenal of F-bombs the band dropped while performing the single ”B.Y.O.B.”
On Their Must List Prog-rockers Mars Volta, who’re touring with System. ”I love their textured sound.”
Next A new U.S. tour in August.
