Must List 2005: The Arcade Fire

AGE 4

MUSTWORTHINESS Propelled by word of mouth (not to mention a showstopping performance at this year’s Coachella festival), the Montreal group’s gorgeous debut, Funeral — an eccentric hodgepodge of indie sounds — has steadily built buzz since its September release. Kudos from the likes of David Bowie and U2 haven’t hurt either.

POP: THE QUESTION ”I don’t think of us as an indie band. I think of us as a pop group,” says singer-guitarist Win Butler, 24 (seated in the above photo). ”But to me, Nick Cave and Tom Waits are pop. It’s not really a dirty word…. I want to write a song as good as ‘Unchained Melody.”’

MAJOR LEAGUE FATIGUE ”I don’t envy a band like the Killers. If we were still touring behind this record a year from now, I think we’d break up and f—ing kill ourselves.”

NEXT Writing songs for their sophomore disc, out next spring.
