Cronicas de un Laberinto

B+

Led by the wounded voice of Saul Hernandez, this veteran Mexican combo pays adoring, if mournful, tribute to arena rock and its larger-than-life riffs. But with its heavily textured anthems, Cronicas de un Laberinto (translation: Chronicles of a Labyrinth) also bears traces of King Crimson’s dissonance; after all, the album was produced by Crimson’s own Adrian Belew. Jaguares’ lyrics — which take on metaphysics and the vicissitudes of love — may be in Spanish, but you won’t need a Berlitz course to comprehend the passion of their music.
