It’s got a talented ensemble cast playing archetypal characters, it’s based on a best-selling novel, it celebrates the power of female bonding… and you’ll need a cattle prod to get the average straight guy to go see it. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (in theaters now) fits easily into that cinematic genre of estro-heavy movies that draw scads of mom-daughter, sister-sister, and BFF combos to movie theaters. The story of four teenage girls — Amber Tamblyn as The Rebel, Alexis Bledel as The Beauty, America Ferrera as The Writer, and Blake Lively as The Athlete — who share a single pair of magic jeans during a memorable summer break is already generating solid reviews (EW gives it a B+), but if you prefer reaching for the Kleenex in the comfort of your own home, try any one of these nine chick-flick predecessors on DVD.
