Ensemble chick flicks: ”The Joy Luck Club”

THE PREMISE The stories of four modern Chinese-American women are woven together with tales from their more traditional, Chinese-born mothers, as the women struggle to iron out their cultural and generational differences.

THE LEADING LADIES Ming-Na as The Soul Searcher, Rosalind Chao as The Doormat, Tamlyn Tomita as The Angry Daughter, Lauren Tom as The Internalizer

THE SCOUNDREL Several here to choose from, but Ying-Ying’s first husband (Russell Wong) earns the title, for driving her to commit an unspeakable act.

YOU’LL LAUGH… During a dinner scene, when Waverly (Tomita) dies of embarrassment as her new, white boyfriend makes a faux pas with the soy sauce.

YOU’LL CRY… Pretty much every 10 minutes, though the sobs are pretty heavy when Jing-Mei (Ming-Na) learns of an agonizing sacrifice her mother once made back in China

FUN FACT Director Wayne Wang went on to direct such chick-friendly flicks as Because of Winn-Dixie, Anywhere but Here, and Maid in Manhattan.

WHAT EW SAID ”Asian-American actresses… rarely get a shot at full-bodied leading parts, and you can feel their relief in the generous, intelligent performances.” (Read the review)
