We’re dying to see ”The Jacket”

WHY WE CAN’T WAIT Blessed with cachet from its recent screening at Sundance, this psychological thriller pairs two favorite new-ish stars, Adrien Brody (The Pianist, The Village) and Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, Bend It Like Beckham).

THE PREMISE Brody is an amnesiac Gulf War vet who’s accused of murder and institutionalized in a creepy asylum, where an experimental treatment sends him traveling back and forth in time. Knightley is a hard-drinking diner waitress who may hold the key to his salvation.

SOURCE A screenplay by Massy Tadjedin, based on a story by Tom Bleecker and Marc Rocco

THE BACK STORY On the day of her audition, Knightley had a bad case of food poisoning. ”I spent most of my energy trying not to projectile vomit on these people I desperately wanted to work with,” she says. But British director John Maybury (Love Is the Devil) thought her queasiness gave her the right look for her alcoholic character.

BURNING QUESTION Will the movie prove too arty for the sci-fi/horror-film crowd, or too horrific for the art-film crowd?

COME FOR The reportedly steamy coupling of Brody and Knightley

STAY FOR The head-trippy imagery of veteran avant-garde director Maybury, making his Hollywood debut
