You’d think after the Golden Globes, when Kathy Griffin caused E! a loss of face and a loss of money with her joke about Dakota Fanning, that the entertainment channel wouldn’t invite her back to the red carpet for more arrivals coverage. But you’d be wrong. The flame-haired comic will be joining Star Jones Reynolds again to patrol the red carpet at Sunday’s Grammys and at the Oscars two weeks later.

Griffin’s Globes remark, joking that Fanning had just that day checked into drug rehab, didn’t seem at all funny to reps for the 10-year-old Hide and Seek star. E! found itself forced to issue an on-air apology, post a prominent notice of ”clarification” on its website’s home page, and cough up a donation to UNICEF’s tsunami relief drive, a Fanning-favored charity. Nonetheless, E! senior vice president Coleman Smith said in a statement, ”Kathy’s razor sharp wit and amazing comedic timing make her a great addition to E!’s award show coverage. We’re pleased to welcome her back on the red carpet for both the Grammy and Oscars this month, and look forward to experiencing her unique humor and offbeat personal observations as the stars arrive.”

For her part, Griffin didn’t seem at all chastened. ”Hot on the heels of the success of my ‘If you don’t win tonight, who are you going to fire tomorrow?’ question, I’m excited to really let loose at the Grammys,” she told Zap2it.com. ”The ‘What are you wearing?’ questions are great, but I want to ask Usher, ‘Who’s more crunk? Bonnie Raitt or John Mayer?”’ Viewers will surely be waiting breathlessly for the answer to that question.
