Karen Joy Fowler recommends her favorite book

Karen Joy Fowler, author of The Jane Austen Book Club, recommends Kevin Brockmeier’s novel The Truth About Cella (Vintage, $12).

The narrator is a writer and a father. One afternoon, while his attention is elsewhere, his 7-year-old daughter vanishes from the yard. He begins by imagining how this happened. In the rest of the book, the narrator tries out one imaginary world after another, attempting to find a place in which he can survive this terrible loss. Each try takes us somewhere very different. I love this book for its wondrous variety, its beauty, its imagination, its strangeness. Each sentence is right and the last is perfect.
