Here’s how to throw the paparazzi off the scent of your celebrity wedding if you’re New York’s top hip-hop couple: elope in Atlanta. That’s what Nas and Kelis did on Jan. 8, a rep for the couple told MTV News. The wedding ends a two-year engagement for the Illmatic rapper and the ”Milkshake” singer, who have been together since meeting at P. Diddy’s afterparty for the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. It’s the first wedding for both the 32-year-old rapper (full name: Nasir Jones) and the 25 year old chanteuse (full name: Kelis Rogers).

Nas discussed his wedding plans in the song ”Getting Married” on his new album, Street’s Disciple, rapping that he and Kelis ”spoke on eloping, but then I dreaded the thought/’cause she deserves Cinderella’s ball and the whole s–t.” But the actual wedding was small and low-key, according to Only friends and family were present, according to the website, including Nas’ brother Jungle, who served as best man, and his father, avant-garde jazz trumpeter Olu Dara. The couple kept their plans close to the vest; Kelis canceled a London club date scheduled for the same weekend at the last minute without telling the club owners why.

Talking to EW a year ago, Kelis described the couple as ”dorky” homebodies who enjoy listening to old Gil Scott-Heron records and watching Pedro Almodóvar movies at home in Manhattan. ”At first he wasn’t into the whole subtitle thing,” she said. ”But now he’s totally down.”
